Chlorine dioxide is a synthetic gas that does not occur naturally, it is obtained by reacting sodium chlorite with an acid (we usually use hydrochloric acid at 4%, although citric acid at 50% used to be used in the past).
- It is a very simple molecule composed of two oxygen atoms and one chlorine atom.
- It is extremely soluble in water and does not create chemical bonds, i.e. the gas dissolves completely in water. When dissolved, it gives a yellowishgreenish colour and a chlorine-like odour.
- To this day, it is the best-known water purifier as it eliminates bacteria, viruses, fungi and (small) parasites. In a very high pH range.
- It is used in the food industry to purify food.
- It is also used to disinfect surgical instruments, even in Madrid to clean SAMU ambulances.
- It is also used to disinfect and store blood in blood banks, being mandatory by law.

- Sodium chlorite is not bleach (sodium hypochlorite), in the same way that water (H2O) is not hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), so let us speak clearly
